I stopped in Leymebamba to visit the museum. In 1996, the remains of an important Near-Inca civilization from northern Peru, the Chachapoyas, were discovered in the nearby Los Cóndores lagoon. The most impressive aspect of this archaeological discovery was the presence of 219 mummies, well preserved for 500 years, of which about 50 specimens can be seen in the museum. Since the weather was very rainy, these were the perfect days for such a visit. In the village square, in a restaurant, I chose to sit in front of this beautiful door. A kind of stage where people come and go in the rain. Children struggling to open their umbrellas, a mother holding hands with her daughter, a gentleman pulling out his chair to smoke a cigar… Then this little boy in his military shirt comes along and leans against the door frame. I take a picture of him too, wondering what he’s doing there, like he’s in the middle of nowhere. Then he takes the plunge, enters the restaurant and asks each table for a coin. When I give him one, he says with great joy, «un abrazo! («a hug») and hugged me for a furtive moment before running off. My frame was ready, the camera was set, all I had to do was raise my arm and release the shutter as he walked through the door. Of all the photos I took that day, this is the one I’ll remember, and it’s also my first in this style.
