I promise I did not hire any extras to stage this picture! Here in Caleta Portales, Valparaiso’s fishing port, every morning dozens of colorful boats return from the Pacific Ocean laden with fresh fish. The city’s restaurateurs and other customers wait for them, but it’s the sea lions, pelicans, and seagulls who are most excited. For three or four hours now, the stalls are taunting the seagulls waiting on this bridge… they’re on the lookout preparing for the moment when, at the end of the market, they’ll have to fly, scream from all sides, and show who’s the strongest to catch the first piece of fish that is still valid. The seagulls are the most numerous and the most cunning, but whether they’re posing or throwing themselves body and soul into the fight, they let me get close without being feared or targeted, and I was able to get a few shots. In fact, the greatest mercy they showed me that day was to spare me from their droppings… in fact, I couldn’t believe I had managed to get away with it!
