Cajamarca is a pretty little town in northern Peru, nestled in the Andes at an altitude of 2,750 meters. Early this morning, I set out to explore the archaeological site of Cumbemayo, the city’s ancient water supply system, a unique relic over 3,000 years old. The site is located 20 km from the city center and 3,500 m above sea level. It’s a steep climb from the start, but the higher you climb above the city, the more striking the view becomes in the light emerging from the morning mist. On the road, however, you’ll have to watch out for stray dogs, which can be quite aggressive in this region.
