The stage looks very calm and quiet, but don’t be fooled… It’s not show time yet! All are at their posts under Valparaiso’s morning sun, reserving their forces for the moment when, later, they will engage in merciless battle. In fact, the hostilities begin around noon, when the stalls are empty and the fishermen throw the guts of the fish back into the sea. That’s when the real battle begins!
It’s easy to imagine that this pelican is king among his subjects every morning, and is forced to surrender at noon to the laws of numbers and strength. It must be said, however, that after the revolution, after the seagulls have left him only what they could not contain in their beaks, this pelican will have lost none of his superbness and will be back the next day. He’ll leave his pride behind, and just as Jacques Brel’s character waited in the rain for Madeleine in search of love, he’ll come back into the sunshine with the same renewed hope of finding a little of his daily food.
