You can tell from this photo that we’ve reached the end of the world. The small red lighthouse in the middle of this blue is the lighthouse of «Tierra del Fuego», Argentina, seen from Puerto Williams on Navarino Island. If you were to stretch this photo out like a panorama, you could see the lights of Ushuaia about thirty kilometers to the left. Navarino Island is part of Chile, and the Beagle Channel separates it from the American continent; on the other side, a little further south, is Cape Horn and Antarctica.
The haze in this photo probably comes from the wood-burning stoves in the fireplaces of Puerto Williams as the sun disappears and the cold sets in for the night; in early fall, the days get shorter and shorter. It’s late April, 6 p.m. at the end of the Southern Hemisphere, and in one swift movement, the fog in the Beagle Channel dissipates, mimicking the sun that has already passed over the horizon.
