If you’re travelling in South America, you’d better love dogs. You’ll meet them every day in the countryside and on the streets of the cities. It’s striking to note that the attitude of these creatures is a reflection of their environment: from one city to another, from one country to another, you’ll find them more or less quiet, more or less friendly. Here in Valparaiso, the dogs are quite peaceful, especially when you leave the center down town and go up to the quieter, more colorful hills. Upstairs in the Cardonal market hall, Guatón is a real character. Whether they’re worried or amused, the locals have nicknamed him «Guatón», because this name means «paunchy». Standing in front of the Coca-Cola cooler, this dog looks like he’s had too much to drink!
